This week I examine the rise in "pub-poker" and in particular the influence of JP Poker.
JP Poker, founded by John-Paul McCann is one of Ireland’s leading poker promotions companies. Run by the ever-energetic and amicable John-Paul McCann, JP poker has strived to new heights in recent times and has really left a mark on poker in Dublin. With tournaments taking place every night of the week, JP is a busy man at present and is slowly becoming central in the development of poker in this country. Having blazed the pub poker scene for some time, JP refuses to sit on his laurels. Constantly changing and looking for advise, JP’s phone is always on. He wants to make pub poker a winning brand of poker and who’s to blame him. The sheer volume of gin-joints in these parts makes for a vast market to pitch to!
Its fair to say that poker in Ireland has risen to unprecedented heights in the last number of years. Every night of the week there is a game available for the poker-crazed Irish punters. These cards enthusiasts can be found in a variety of locations across the country. The kitchen table is the green felt for many an aspiring player but most players work their way up to the Poker clubs in the city centre. These card-clubs can be all too daunting places for a new member and not everyone falls in love with them. They can appear all too serious and distant from what they are accustomed to. After all their poker perspective was founded on fun and entertainment. People want to enjoy themselves playing cards and Casinos are often not the best upgrade from their Thurs night home game. JP Poker may well often a more favourable setting.
You can expect several things when participating in a JP Poker tournament. Firstly you will notice the friendly staff and dealers (where applicable) such as Christine doing a sterling job. Secondly, the novice players should feel welcome by the relaxed atmosphere. (Poker in the pub is fast becoming an alternative yet fun night out). The location changes each night allowing for more players on a whole at the JP-Poker tournaments. Finally there is a fast blind structure that suits the game at hand. Budding WSOP winners may grimace at the thought but many more want the game to end at a respectable hour. JP games are not marathons but merely poker sprints, be aware of that.
Whatever way you look at it JP Poker has been a successful addition to poker. Fuelling the passion of Irish poker players for some time, long may it continue!
